CHENNAI experienced a significant increase in rainfall this March to May, receiving 9.2 cm, which is 110% above the average of 4.4 cm, according to regional meteorological centre director B Amudha, who announced the early onset of the southwest monsoon. A red alert has been issued for Coimbatore and The Nilgiris due to expected heavy rainfall, while fishermen are advised to stay out of the sea until May 28 due to rough conditions. The state noted a rainfall deficit of 92% compared to the average, with maximum rainfall recorded at 11 cm in Avalanche, Nilgiris.
