President Donald Trump wants a quick ceasefire in Ukraine, but President Vladimir Putin of Russia seems to be in no rush, using the recent rift between Trump and Ukraine’s president to potentially prolong the conflict. With the U.S.’ alliance with Ukraine strained, Putin may hold out for a deal on his terms, potentially expanding his push on the battlefield. Trump’s remarks suggest that if Ukraine doesn’t agree to a ceasefire, they may have to “fight it out” without American support, allowing Putin to gain dominance over Ukraine and concessions from the West.
