North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a successful test of a new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile, pledging to accelerate the country’s nuclear and missile capabilities. The missile was fired from the outskirts of Pyongyang, reaching 1,500 km at 12 times the speed of sound. The test coincided with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to South Korea, where he pledged cooperation to respond to Pyongyang’s military threats. South Korea’s military believes the KCNA report was exaggerated, estimating the range at around 1,100 km and questioning the presence of a second peak during the flight.
