Lieutenant Generals to be promoted based on merit under new policy

India is moving towards the creation of tri-service theatre commands, prompting the Army to implement a new promotion policy for top officers. Lieutenant Generals will now undergo a “quantified assessment system” to determine their performance and merit-based selection for apex-level appointments in integrated theatre commands. This new policy, effective from March 31, aims to align the Army with the Air Force and Navy, emphasizing merit over seniority for promotions in preparation for the impending theatre commands.
