China is conducting live-fire drills off the coast of Fujian province facing Taiwan, following a recent air-and-sea drill in response to Taiwan’s rejection of Beijing’s sovereignty claims. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry is monitoring the exercises, which are part of China’s efforts to increase its presence in the region. In response, the U.S. continues to conduct “freedom of navigation” transits through the Taiwan Strait, with recent transits by the USS Higgins and the HMCS Vancouver, and Germany sending warships through the strait to bolster defense engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.
