1 dead, 2 missing in sludge collapse at Chinese-fund nickel plant in Indonesia

One person has died and two are missing after a nickel waste disposal site collapsed on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, during heavy rains at a Chinese-funded nickel smelting plant. The victims, operating dump trucks, were engulfed by ferronickel burning waste material, with one body recovered and two still missing. Authorities are investigating possible negligence by the company, PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, in the latest deadly incident at a smelting plant linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
