A Zimbabwean court has convicted an opposition leader and 34 activists on charges of participating in an unlawful gathering after being detained for over five months, facing up to five years in prison or a fine. The court acquitted 30 others who were detained with the opposition leader, Jameson Timba, who were arrested at his residence in Harare in June for disorderly conduct and promoting violence. Amnesty International has condemned the arrests as part of a pattern of repression against peaceful assembly, calling for an investigation into allegations of torture while in police custody.
