An urgent Waitangi Tribunal claim is assessing the rights of Māori born overseas and their children to belong as tangata whenua in Aotearoa. The two-day hearing, led by Judge Alana Thomas, was prompted by John Ruddock (Ngāpuhi), who experienced significant barriers in securing citizenship for his three children born in the U.S. after becoming their sole caregiver.
