A man was critically injured after being stabbed in the stomach in central Nelson shortly after midnight on December 7. The victim described the pain as feeling like being “whipped with a piece of string” and required emergency surgery for a punctured abdomen. Chevy Manakau Ropiha, the assailant, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in the Nelson District Court, facing a maximum 14-year prison sentence. The attack occurred just before Ropiha’s 18th birthday.
