Worcester City Councilor Thu Nguyen, who is nonbinary, has been absent from council meetings since February 11 due to alleged transphobia and discrimination but has not resigned and is still receiving pay. Councilor Etel Haxhiaj is voting remotely after receiving threats of a sexual nature, while Mayor Petty continues to read Nguyen’s name during roll call. Nguyen, the first nonbinary person elected to public office in Massachusetts, announced an indefinite leave from the council, citing discrimination and transphobia, and will not be running for re-election.
