During his 11 years as a Marine, Brenden Taylor and his family struggled to find affordable housing near Camp Pendleton in Southern California due to rising rents, with only 26% of active-duty families surveyed saying their housing allowance covered costs last year. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ruben Gallego are urging the Defense Department to investigate potential profiteering by landlords using RealPage Inc.’s rent-pricing system, as federal and state lawsuits allege that it has led to price hikes near military bases across the country. The Department of Defense has increased housing allowances to help offset rising costs for service members and their families.
