Research led by the University of Exeter reveals that wild chimpanzees in west Africa share fermented African breadfruit, which contains low levels of alcohol, suggesting they may experience bonding benefits similar to humans. Observations showed the sharing behavior among all ages and sexes, with some chimpanzees preferring the fermented fruit over others. This study raises questions about the evolutionary origins of feasting behaviors and indicates that chimpanzees could intentionally seek out ethanolic fruits, hinting at deep-rooted social traditions.
