On December 12, 2025, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the first section of Canada’s high-speed rail project, linking Ottawa and Montreal, emphasizing its practical benefits and strategic importance. CEO of Alto, Martin Imbleau, highlighted this segment as a manageable starting point for the broader 1,000-kilometre electric rail network. The project aims to reduce travel times significantly, with trains reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h. Public consultations are set for January 2026, and the government aims to expedite the project, hoping for construction to begin by 2029.
