Whitesides captures L.A. County congressional seat in a major victory for Democrats

Democrat George Whitesides defeated Republican Rep. Mike Garcia in a fiercely contested House race to represent northern Los Angeles County in Congress, promising to focus on creating jobs, lowering costs, and protecting Social Security and Medicare. The race, considered a toss-up, saw Whitesides, a first-time candidate and former NASA chief of staff, receive major backing from the Democratic Party.
