WhatsApp is working on a new end-to-end encryption (E2EE) label for individual and group conversations, currently in development. The messaging app will display a message in chats confirming that messages are encrypted and not stored by WhatsApp. This new encryption visibility feature comes shortly after Meta’s post addressing E2EE issues and delays in implementing third-party chats in Europe due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Recently spotted by WABetaInfo, the new feature was observed in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.6.11 for select beta testers. The update was released on March 9 through the Google Play Beta Program. The feature is currently limited to some beta testers, indicating it is still in early stages and may undergo further changes.

The report indicates a new label stating “end-to-end encrypted” below the Contact or Group name section, preceded by a lock icon. The label disappears after a few seconds, revealing last seen status in individual chats and participant names in group chats. This feature adds a new layer of encryption visibility within the app.
Interestingly, WhatsApp already displays an E2EE label at the bottom of the home screen, below chats, and also in voice/video call screens, statuses, etc. Users can verify encryption manually in the Encryption tab on the contact info page. This new label serves as a proactive reminder about encryption status, easily visible to users.
Given Meta’s concerns about encryption in third-party chats in Europe, this feature is timely. Meta uses the Signal protocol-based Noise Protocol Framework for encryption and urges messaging apps to sign agreements and use compatible protocols.
