Turkey has been engaged in a decades-long conflict with the Kurdish militant group P.K.K., resulting in more than 40,000 casualties. Following a call from imprisoned founder Abdullah Ocalan, Kurdish fighters have declared a cease-fire, but the resolution of the conflict and potential government concessions remain uncertain. The Kurds, an ethnic group of around 40 million people spread across several countries, have long sought greater rights and autonomy.
