The remains of a 1,500-year-old underground Byzantine tomb complex were discovered in Maarat al-Numan, northern Syria, during reconstruction work on May 25. The site, consisting of two burial chambers with six stone tombs and a cross-engraved column, highlights Syria’s rich cultural heritage, which has suffered extensive destruction during the civil war. The Syrian Ministry of Culture has expressed its commitment to preserving this significant archaeological find, ensuring protection against vandalism and looting.
