Toronto-based immigration lawyers criticize the idea of advising clients to bring a burner phone to the U.S. due to increased scrutiny by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. Refusing to unlock devices for searches can lead to confiscation, denial of entry, or even detention. While device searches are rare, they have been increasing in frequency, with only 0.1% of travellers having their devices searched in 2024.
