Waterway restoration sees return of endangered mudfish

A critically threatened endemic freshwater fish, the Kōwaro or Canterbury Mudfish, has been found at a Craigmore Sustainables farm near Timaru. Department of Conservation staff confirmed the presence of the mudfish in the farm’s irrigation spring, which provides an ideal habitat due to its clean water and dense aquatic plant growth. This discovery highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect this unique species in Canterbury.
