A U.N. report reveals that illegal weapons smuggling into Haiti is fueling gang violence, resulting in over 4,200 deaths and 1,356 injuries from July to February. Gangs, self-defense groups, and law enforcement are all contributing to the escalating violence, with police reportedly involved in summary executions. Nearly 1,000 firearms belonging to Haiti’s National Police have been diverted, and an estimated 270,000 to 500,000 illegal weapons are circulating in the country, posing severe human rights abuses and challenges in detection and seizure due to underfunding, corruption, and lack of resources.
