A new Covid-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, has emerged in the US, primarily detected in international travelers and now showing signs of local transmission. This variant has contributed to a surge in cases in Asia, with significant increases in hospitalizations and positive tests in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, although the World Health Organization indicates it is not more severe than previous strains. The variant is reported to have a greater ability to bind to human cells, suggesting it could be more transmissible, yet there is no current surge in positive testing in the US.
