In Opotiki, the Waitangi Day for Te Whakatohea is on May 27 and 28, but has been largely ignored by the Whakatohea Maori Trust Board and their kupapa gang, who only celebrated it once to sign a settlement deal with the government. The post-settlement nepopalities continue to suppress radical Hapu, displaying a hollow sham of dependency and parasitism, while the preference for the 1834 Independence flag over the Tino flag reflects a desire for pre-Treaty sovereignty and independence in the Eastern Bay region.
