WA Government announces support for tourism businesses affected by Cyclone Narelle

Tourism businesses in Western Australia affected by Tropical Cyclone Narelle can apply for financial assistance from a newly announced $1.45 million support package. The WA Government will provide one-time payments of up to $10,000 for businesses with fewer than four employees and up to $20,000 for those with four or more staff. In addition to direct payments, the initiative will include voucher schemes offering 50% off selected tours and experiences to encourage visitors to explore the Coral Coast region. Premier Roger Cook emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses during the busy Easter period, highlighting that many remain operational. Applications for the relief payments opened on Sunday, coinciding with the reopening of parts of Minilya-Exmouth Road, which had been closed due to cyclone damage.

Why It Matters

The financial support is crucial for the recovery of the tourism sector in areas like Exmouth, which experienced significant setbacks due to the cyclone. Historically, natural disasters have deeply impacted local economies, especially in tourism-dependent regions. The Coral Coast is regarded as a major tourism destination in Western Australia; thus, restoring business confidence and visitor traffic is vital for economic stability. The government’s proactive measures reflect a recognition of the tourism industry’s role in maintaining regional livelihoods and fostering community resilience during recovery efforts.
