Earthquake near eastern Russia; tsunami risk for some areas

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia at a depth of 10 km, with the potential for hazardous tsunami waves affecting areas within 1000 km of the epicenter, according to the US Geological Survey. However, officials from New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that there was no tsunami risk to New Zealand.
