The first stage of the Volta ao Algarve ended in chaos as a large part of the peloton went the wrong way, leading to the cancellation of the 190km stage from Portimao to Lagos with no winner declared. Italian rider Filippo Ganna crossed the line first after many of his rivals mistakenly followed a deviation off the course, causing confusion and frustration among the cyclists. Austrian cyclist Marco Haller criticized the finish as “ridiculous” and called for consequences for the race officials and organisers, highlighting the need for better course management to prevent such incidents in the future.
