Venezuela’s popular opposition leader, María Corina Machado, was briefly detained by adversaries during an antigovernment protest in Caracas, but was soon released. Living in hiding amid threats, this was her first public appearance since August, calling for protests against autocrat Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration. Thousands supported her at an event where she was knocked off her motorbike, detained briefly, and forced to record videos before being released.
