A recent study suggests that a vegan diet may not necessarily lead to better health outcomes. Research has indicated that consuming plant-based meat products may not have a significant positive impact on cardiac health. In fact, individuals who consumed vegan sausages and burgers had higher blood pressure compared to meat-eaters.
Experts have criticized the “health halo” associated with plant-based products, urging the food industry to reconsider the development of future meat alternatives. Dr. Sumanto Haldar, a co-author of the study from Bournemouth University, highlighted the need for improvement in plant-based meat analogues to deliver superior health benefits.
According to Dr. Haldar, current plant-based meat alternatives do not offer the same health advantages as a traditional plant-based diet rich in whole foods like whole grains, legumes, and various fruits and vegetables. This calls for a reevaluation in the food industry to develop meat alternative products that not only taste good but also provide enhanced nutritional value at an affordable price for all consumers.
