New York City FC and USMNT midfielder James Sands underwent surgery for a significant right ankle injury, including a fractured fibula and torn MCL, after falling in a match for Bundesliga side St. Pauli. Sands, 24, was on loan to St. Pauli and had hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup, but is now out indefinitely following the surgery in Germany.
