US DOT Reduces Fuel Efficiency Standards

The Department of Transportation under President Trump is proposing to reduce fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks to an average of 34.5 miles per gallon for model year 2031, down from Biden’s goal of 50.4 mpg. This move follows a review ordered by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shortly after Trump’s return to office and coincides with the termination of a tax credit for electric vehicle purchases. While the administration claims potential cost savings, rising gas prices and the impact of climate change remain significant concerns. International manufacturers are advancing in EV technology, potentially leaving the U.S. market behind.
