UN Security Council to decide fate of peacekeeper mandate in Lebanon

The UN Security Council will vote on the future of the UN peacekeeping mission in south Lebanon, facing opposition from the US and Israel, with a proposed compromise extending the mandate until December 2026 while planning for withdrawal. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has urged for the peacekeepers to remain, citing ongoing Israeli occupation, and the resolution also calls for Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory.
