UN rights chief decries substantial rise in death penalty executions

The High Commissioner criticized countries for using the death penalty, citing it as incompatible with human dignity and the right to life, especially as executions have increased globally. He called on China to provide transparent data on the death penalty and commended countries like Malawi and Malaysia for implementing judicial reforms to reduce death sentences. Zimbabwe’s Attorney General highlighted the country’s historical use of the death penalty, noting a shift towards more judicial discretion and reduced executions in recent years due to policy decisions and compliance with UN resolutions.
