UN positions in Lebanon risk being ‘occupied’: peacekeeping chief

The UN peacekeeping chief stated that the UNIFIL force in Lebanon will stay despite recent attacks, safeguarding the “Blue Line” with Israel. Under secretary-general Jean-Pierre Lacroix affirmed the peacekeepers’ commitment to their mandate, rejecting Israel’s request to move back. The force has faced over 30 incidents in October, with tensions rising due to Israel’s conflicts with Hezbollah and Hamas, triggered by Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.
