The United Nations has appointed Ian Martin to conduct a strategic assessment of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) amid growing criticism and accusations following the October 7 Hamas attack and ensuing Gaza conflict. This review, part of the UN80 initiative to address financial challenges exacerbated by US budget cuts, aims to evaluate the political, financial, and security constraints faced by UNRWA, which has been essential in providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees since its establishment in 1949. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric emphasized the goal of improving UNRWA’s operations to better serve the communities reliant on its assistance.
