In a workforce transformed by war, Ukrainian women are now working in coal mines

Iryna Ostanko and Tetiana Medvedenko, both underground machine operators at a DTEK coal mine in Ukraine, represent the changing workforce due to the war in the country. Previously, women were prohibited from working in underground mines, but the ban was lifted in 2022 due to a worker shortage caused by the conflict with Russia. Now, hundreds of Ukrainian women work in coal mines to keep operations running.
