Uber is revising its driver background check policies following a New York Times investigation revealing that the company allowed drivers with serious criminal convictions, including violent felonies, in 22 states, provided the offenses were over seven years old. The company had previously banned drivers convicted of murder, terrorism, sexual assault, and kidnapping but is now planning to exclude all individuals with violent felonies and certain other offenses regardless of when they occurred. This change aims to enhance passenger safety as reports of sexual assault and misconduct involving Uber drivers have raised public concerns. An Uber spokesman emphasized the company’s commitment to evolving its safety culture in response to these issues.
