His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, witnessed the announcement of a partnership between the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative and XPRIZE. The investment of $150 million will launch the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition, with a total prize purse of $119 million.

The five-year global competition aims to encourage innovators worldwide to focus on transforming the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of water desalination technologies.

The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative aims to raise awareness of water scarcity on the international agenda and accelerate the development, testing, and deployment of sustainable technological solutions. The initiative aims to address the threats posed by water scarcity to people, businesses, and communities globally through targeted investment, technological innovation, and international cooperation.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, emphasized the need for new solutions to address the water scarcity crisis. The initiative is committed to collaborating with stakeholders worldwide to uncover, prove the viability of, and efficiently bring new ideas to fruition.

The partnership announcement ceremony took place at the historic Niqa Bin Ateej Water Tank and was attended by various dignitaries and officials.

Global water scarcity is a growing problem affecting billions of people worldwide. Without effective action, water scarcity could lead to devastating consequences such as loss of life, food insecurity, and geopolitical instability. The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative is part of the UAE’s efforts to address global water scarcity.
