U.S. Examined Allegations of Cartel Ties to Allies of Mexico’s President
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

According to U.S. records and sources familiar with the matter, American law enforcement officials spent years investigating claims that allies of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had meetings with and received millions of dollars from drug cartels after he took office. The inquiry revealed potential links between powerful cartel members and Mexican advisers and officials close to the president during his time in office. However, no formal investigation was opened into Mr. López Obrador, and the inquiry was ultimately shelved due to a lack of interest from the U.S. government in pursuing allegations against a top ally.

While drug cartels have a history of infiltrating the Mexican government, the U.S. officials did not find direct connections between President López Obrador and criminal organizations. The information collected from informants was obtained during investigations into cartel activities, but it was difficult to verify the accuracy of the accounts. Allegations included meetings between the president’s confidants and cartel leaders, payments to the president’s allies from cartel members, and claims of videos showing the president’s sons handling drug money.

Despite these allegations, President López Obrador denied any wrongdoing. The U.S. law enforcement officers also tracked payments from suspected cartel members to intermediaries for the president, but no direct evidence linking the president himself to criminal activities was found. The U.S. has a history of pursuing charges against foreign officials involved in drug trafficking, but building a case against President López Obrador would be challenging.

The Biden administration values its relationship with President López Obrador, as he plays a key role in addressing issues like migration and drug trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border. While past investigations into corruption allegations involving the president’s associates have been put on hold, the reports of U.S. law enforcement officials examining these claims could have negative implications. The handling of these inquiries reflects the complexity of pursuing charges against high-ranking foreign officials and the delicate balance of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Mexico.

Recent elections in Romania, Poland, and Portugal reveal that the influence of Donald Trump on European politics is increasing, contributing to rising populism and polarization across the continent. While candidates like Romania's Nicusor Dan and Poland's Rafal Trzaskowski secured victories against Trump-aligned opponents, Portugal's far-right Chega party made significant gains, indicating a fragmented political landscape. Experts suggest that Trump's impact is stronger now than two years ago, reflecting broader global trends in political sentiment. Full...

SummaryElon Musk's recent political spending in Wisconsin, particularly in backing a candidate in the state’s Supreme Court race, was largely unsuccessful, leading him to announce a reduction in future political contributions. Following a significant loss for the candidate he supported, Democrats claimed victory over Musk's influence, labeling him "toxic" in the state. Despite his retreat, analysts suggest Musk may still engage in political funding, albeit with a lower profile, as his previous contributions were substantial,...
