Two pensioners, Barbara Wheeler (73) and Margaret Bull (84), faced fly-tipping fines after leaving bags of clothes for the Tree of Hope charity outside their homes in Tonbridge, Kent. The local council’s enforcement firm, Kingdom, sent letters threatening fines up to £1,000 for “suspected waste offences.” Following public outcry, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council apologized and confirmed that the fines would be dropped. The council is reviewing their enforcement practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
