A report by UK-based Merchant Machine revealed that two markets in Gauteng have secured spots in the global ‘top 20’ rankings. Additionally, 12 South African markets made it to the continent’s top 20 list.
Victoria Yards market in Johannesburg’s Yeoville has been ranked 7th globally. The market plays a key role in job creation through various projects such as urban agriculture, artisan studios, urban farming, visual arts, and skills development. It also hosts workshops, exhibits, food events, live performances, and more.
The Market @ The Sheds in Pretoria secured the 15th position as one of the best tourist markets globally. The market hosts events on the first Saturday of each month, showcasing local art, fashion, food, and live entertainment.
Merchant Machine used publicly available review data from Tripadvisor in December 2023 to determine the rankings. Only markets with 25 or more reviews were considered for the rankings, focusing on farmers markets, street markets, and flee markets.
Provo Farmers Market in Utah, USA, claimed the top spot globally, with the US having a total of 12 markets in the top 20 list.
