A fire broke out at a 12-story hotel in a ski resort in northwest Turkey, killing at least 66 people, including two who jumped from the building to escape. At least 51 others were injured. The fire started during a school holiday and the hotel was packed with guests. An investigation is ongoing, and the government declared a national day of mourning. Witnesses reported that the fire detection system failed to operate, and the wooden cladding on the hotel’s exterior may have accelerated the spread of the fire.
