A tsunami alert has been issued for north-east Japan following a 6.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast, which reached a 4 on Japan’s intensity scale. Residents in Iwate are warned to expect waves up to one metre and advised to stay away from beaches and waterways. The quake occurred at a depth of 10km near Sanriku at 5pm local time. A tsunami forecast for slight sea level changes has also been issued for Hokkaido and surrounding areas.
