Trump vows an additional 10% tariff on China, 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to increase tariffs by 10% on all Chinese goods entering the U.S., following a similar tariff imposition on Mexico and Canada. Trump cited illegal immigration and drug trafficking as reasons for the tariffs, specifically mentioning the synthetic opioid Fentanyl, which has caused numerous overdose deaths in the U.S. China’s embassy spokesperson emphasized the mutual benefits of economic cooperation and disputed Trump’s claims regarding efforts to curb Fentanyl imports, citing ongoing communication between counternarcotics teams since a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden in November 2023.
