The Trump administration abruptly terminated approximately $1.9 billion in federal grants for mental health and addiction treatment programs, affecting 2,706 discretionary grants from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). However, following significant bipartisan backlash, these cuts were reversed within a day. The initial terminations, which were reportedly not initiated by career officials, were aimed at reallocating resources despite many grants addressing rising mental health and substance abuse issues. Notably, among the canceled grants were significant funding for the Opioid Response Network and the Building Communities of Recovery program.
