2024 Earthshot Prize finalist, Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO), founded by Joshoua Amponsem and Desmond Alugnoa in 2014, aims to promote sustainable waste management through its innovative Zero Waste Model, creating jobs and income by recycling waste materials. With a focus on circular waste management, GAYO has already created 70 jobs and diverted 170 tonnes of waste from landfills in Ghana, with plans to expand and impact other African countries by 2030. As one of the Earthshot Prize finalists, GAYO will receive mentorship and support to accelerate the growth of their model and potentially win one of the five £1 million prizes in November.
