In January 2022, six Kazakh police officers were convicted of abusing power and torturing foreigners, including renowned jazz musician Vikram Ruzakhunov, during the chaotic Qandy Qantar protests in Almaty. Ruzakhunov, who suffered injuries from the abuse, bravely pursued justice, leading to the officers’ trial and sentencing to three years in prison. However, victims and activists remain unsatisfied, highlighting ongoing challenges in the fight for human rights and justice in Kazakhstan.
