Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev was shot multiple times while walking through the stairwell of his apartment complex in Moscow. The assailant, who had been waiting for him, fled the scene after the attack, leaving Alekseyev in critical condition and heavily bleeding. The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into the attempted murder and illegal firearms use. Alekseyev, 64, is the deputy chief of the main directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defence and has been under European sanctions since the 2018 Salisbury nerve agent attack.
