Five States Recognized for Excellence in Patient Safety by Healthgrades

Hundreds of hospitals across the United States have been awarded for their excellence in patient safety, as highlighted in Healthgrades’ recently released 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award. A total of 438 hospitals from 40 states are recognized, placing them in the top 10% nationwide for their ability to prevent serious and avoidable complications during hospital stays. The states with the most top-performing hospitals include Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, with counts ranging from 21 to 62 award recipients. The evaluation was based on 13 patient safety indicators, demonstrating that patients at these hospitals faced significantly lower risks for critical safety events such as falls, collapsed lungs, and infections. If all hospitals achieved the same safety levels as this year’s award recipients, it is estimated that over 100,000 patient safety events could have been avoided from 2022 to 2024.

Why It Matters

The recognition of hospitals for patient safety is significant because high safety standards directly correlate with improved health outcomes and reduced medical complications. Historical data indicates that preventable errors and complications account for a substantial portion of in-hospital incidents, emphasizing the importance of safety practices in healthcare settings. The concentration of award-winning hospitals in populous states suggests that larger healthcare systems may implement more effective safety measures, potentially influencing patient outcomes across various regions. Additionally, the lack of recognized hospitals in certain states highlights disparities in access to quality healthcare, which can affect patient care in underserved areas.
