Thousands of critically endangered tortoises were swept away from a sanctuary in southern Madagascar during floods caused by Cyclone Dikeledi, prompting a community rescue effort to save them. Despite losing much of its infrastructure, over 10,000 tortoises were successfully rescued and returned to the Lavavolo Tortoise Center, with around 700 casualties reported. Radiated and spider tortoises, critically endangered due to habitat destruction and poaching, are native to Madagascar and face significant threats to their survival.
