Third member of UNC’s 2025-26 backcourt enters transfer portal

The NCAA transfer portal opened on Tuesday, prompting several players to announce their decisions to transfer from their respective programs. Among those is UNC freshman guard Isaiah Denis, who has entered the portal following a season in which he saw limited playing time. Another player from the Tar Heels, junior guard Jaydon Young, also declared his intention to transfer after joining UNC from Virginia Tech. Young had a few standout moments, including a season-high 12 points against Wake Forest, but mostly contributed off the bench. With UNC’s backcourt players Seth Trimble and Derek Dixon likely returning, Young may face challenges in securing minutes next season. He initially committed to High Point University before transferring to UNC, and the recent success of HPU, including their first NCAA Tournament win, could influence his next move.

Why It Matters

The transfer portal has become a crucial aspect of college basketball, allowing athletes to change programs more freely. This season, UNC’s roster is undergoing significant changes, especially with the recent appointments of new head coach Michael Malone and the high-profile exits of players like Young. Historically, players entering the transfer portal often seek increased playing time or a better fit within a program. The potential for Young to return to a North Carolina school, especially one like High Point coming off an impressive season, illustrates the shifting dynamics in college basketball as teams adapt to new coaching strategies and player movements.
