Located in the Free State province, Bothaville was established in the 1890’s and is one of the country’s top agricultural communities.

Here are some things to do in and around Bothaville:

Doornkraal Monument

The Doornkraal Battlefield is where the surprise attack on General Christian de Wet and his men took place on the 6th of November 1900. While De Wet himself was able to escape, many of his men fought until the bitter end. In total, 131 people lost their lives. Thus, the Doornkraal Monument serves to commemorate those who died in the attack. Visiting this monument will help you travel back in time to gain a better understanding of the area’s history.

Sandveld Nature Reserve

Located just an hour and a half from Bothaville is the beautiful Sandveld Nature Reserve. It is one of the country’s major birding spots and boasts approximately 295 species of birds.

Birds abound at the Nature Reserve.

The reserve is also home to a number of other animals including the white rhino, buffalo, giraffe and zebra. If you are a lover of nature and desire a little taste of the Kalahari, the Sandveld Nature Reserve is definitely worth considering.

Historic Police Station

The Historic Police Station is the town’s oldest building. The three-room sandstone building was erected in 1894 and served as a police station and prison. Today, it is the town’s museum and is undoubtedly worth visiting for a trip down memory lane.

Welkom Museum

Welkom is situated less than an hour away from Bothaville and is one of the Free State’s mining hubs. The Welkom Museum is the place to be for the complete history and insight of gold mining. On your visit, you can expect to view many interesting aspects of the gold production process, all of which are on display in the library.

Address: Public Library, Civic Centre, Stateway, Welkom, 9459.
